Surat Eye-Care Initiative Crosses 30,000 Free Surgeries

A unique eye-care initiative from Surat is taking screening and treatment closer to people living in rural areas of Gujarat.
Retina specialist Dr. Bhavin Patel has helped build an outreach model that takes eye screening camps to villages and connects patients requiring advanced treatment with care facilities in Surat.
According to the reported figures, the initiative has conducted more than 30,000 free surgeries and organises nearly 40 screening camps every month.
The screening programme helps identify conditions such as cataracts and retinal disorders at an earlier stage. Patients who require specialist treatment or surgery can then be referred to the hospital in Surat, with transportation arranged for eligible patients.
The initiative also focuses on rehabilitation and support for people living with visual impairment.
The larger message is simple: healthcare access should not depend only on how close a patient lives to a specialist. Taking screening closer to communities can help identify eye conditions earlier and connect patients with appropriate care.
