Scientists Discover a Surprising New Target for Treating Type 2 Diabetes

A study in Nature Communications links the protein Miro1 to insulin resistance in muscle and suggests it could be a future drug target.

Scientists Discover a Surprising New Target for Treating Type 2 Diabetes

Scientists reported in Nature Communications that Miro1, a protein found at elevated levels in the skeletal muscle of people with Type 2 diabetes, may interfere with the body's response to insulin. In preclinical models, removing the protein restored insulin responsiveness. A separate finding was that aerobic exercise lowered Miro1 levels in people with the condition. The team also ran a randomised controlled trial involving participants with obesity and Type 2 diabetes. The work was led by researchers at Louisiana State University.

The findings are early. The reporting describes the protein as a possible future treatment target rather than a drug, and the work so far used cells and preclinical models. For Indian clinicians, the study points to a muscle pathway worth watching, but it does not alter current management, and the reporting does not address Indian patients.
