Around 2,000 MBBS seats vacant; colleges seek NMC mop-up round
Medical colleges and state governments are reportedly asking the NMC to allow a mop-up admission round after more than 2,000 MBBS seats went unfilled.

Several medical colleges and state governments are reportedly urging the National Medical Commission to allow a mop-up round, as more than 2,000 MBBS seats remain unfilled across the country. Reported figures differ: 837 seats were left after the final NEET UG 2026 counselling round, per Medical Counselling Committee sources, while another report cites 824 unallotted seats across 14 deemed universities. In Karnataka, 191 MBBS seats stayed vacant after seven counselling rounds.
An NMC report to the health ministry put unfilled MBBS seats in government colleges, excluding AIIMS and JIPMER, at 2,849 in 2024-25. In Andhra Pradesh, 112 NRI quota seats stayed empty after the stray round ended on October 23, and the NMC has agreed to examine a request for a deadline extension and a lower NEET percentile.
