Mumbai Surgeons Complete 10-Hour Living Donor Liver Transplant In Six-Kg Infant

Doctors at Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital in Mumbai carried out a living donor liver transplant on a one-year-old infant weighing six kilograms, the Free Press Journal reported. His mother donated part of her liver. The operation took 10 hours. Surgeons removed the diseased liver, put in the donated portion and rebuilt the blood vessels and bile duct. Afterwards the infant spent seven days in the transplant intensive care unit and eight more in a high-dependency ward.

For Indian paediatric liver teams, the case shows living donor grafts being used in a six-kilogram infant at a Mumbai children's hospital. The report gives no outcome data, so it describes a single case. Doctors noted that ongoing cardiac and kidney checks will be necessary, a reminder that care continues well after the operation.
