NMC Says Denotification Does Not Dilute Medical Education Standards

The National Medical Commission says withdrawing its 2023 standards regulations leaves prescribed medical education norms intact and keeps oversight in place.

NMC Says Denotification Does Not Dilute Medical Education Standards

The National Medical Commission has said that de-notifying the Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations, 2023, will not lower prescribed standards for medical education in India. The statutory body denotified the regulations on October 14, and it describes the step as a way to remove overlapping procedures. The statement was reported from New Delhi on October 23, 2026.

According to the Commission, the regulations had created a parallel route for institutional evaluation, annual renewal and enforcement alongside the undergraduate and postgraduate education boards, producing duplicate functions. Following judicial observations, it chose to align responsibilities with the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. Annual Disclosure Reports stay mandatory, covering faculty, infrastructure, clinical facilities and patient load, and remain open to verification by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board.
