Not every complex heart blockage needs bypass surgery. This was proven once again in a recent case handled at Sterling Hospital.
A High-Risk Case Arrives
A patient with multiple heart blockages was brought to Dr. Rushiraj Pothiwala, a renowned interventional cardiologist at Sterling Hospital. The patient’s blood sugar level had reached 500, and the overall physical condition was weak. When angiography was performed, multiple complex blockages were revealed, the kind that typically push doctors toward bypass surgery as the safest route.
Why Bypass Wasn’t the Only Option
In fact, bypass had already been suggested by some doctors as the only viable option. However, given the patient’s fragile condition, a different approach was chosen by Dr. Pothiwala.
The Technique That Was Used
Instead of surgery, an advanced, AI-guided angioplasty technique was selected, combined with calcium modification technology. Through this approach, each blockage was treated individually, and the arteries were successfully reopened using stents, without the patient being subjected to a more invasive procedure.

The Outcome
The results were clear. Steady improvement was observed in the patient’s condition after treatment, and recovery began sooner than a bypass surgery would typically allow.
As Dr. Pothiwala himself has noted, bypass surgery isn’t automatically the only answer for every blockage. Instead, the patient’s condition, risk factors, and available advanced techniques must be carefully weighed. Cardiology has evolved significantly, and technologies like AI-guided angioplasty are expanding what’s possible for high-risk patients, a shift also highlighted by the American College of Cardiology in its coverage of interventional advances.
Consequently, cases like this highlight why individualized treatment decisions matter so much in modern cardiac care.
